What are the Pros and Cons of Clay Pavers?

To create clay pavers, clay is dug from the earth and formed into the desired shape.  Each clay paving unit is then fired in a kiln, resulting in a long-lasting and sturdy material, much like clay pots and mugs.  The natural color of the clay varies based on its place of origin.  This can be left as-is for a more muted, natural look or enhanced by adding pigments before shaping and firing.  With an inherent slip-resistant surface, clay pavers are exceptionally durable and resistant to disintegration or cracks.  Typically, they do not require a sealer, except for around salt-water pools.  These pavers retain their natural color without fading over time, making them an excellent choice for outdoor spaces.

While clay pavers have several advantages, such as their aesthetic appeal, they also have a few drawbacks.  Firstly, they tend to be pricier than their concrete counterparts.  Secondly, the brittle nature of clay makes them a more challenging material to cut, which can increase installation costs.  Additionally, the size of clay pavers may vary slightly from unit to unit—however, this poses minimal difficulty for experienced paving contractors.  Despite these minor drawbacks, clay pavers remain a durable and stylish option for outdoor landscaping projects.

What are the Pros and Cons of Concrete Pavers?

In contrast to clay, which is a natural material sourced directly from the ground, concrete is an artificial, man-made substance.  Concrete pavers are created by blending crushed stone, sand, and cement; this mix is often supplemented with pigments to achieve the desired hue.  The mixture is then poured or pressed into molds and allowed to dry and solidify.  The resultant concrete pavers have exceptional strength and durability, requiring minimal maintenance.  Compared to clay pavers, they are significantly cost-effective, and they're available in a vast variety of shapes and colors, some of which resemble luxurious natural stone.  Another positive aspect of concrete pavers is that they have a consistent size and shape and are more effortlessly shaped than clay pavers, lowering installation expenses.

In the "cons" column, unsealed concrete pavers are prone to bleaching and fading after prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun.  While some clients may not mind the mellowing effect, others do.  It is possible to prevent fading by applying a UV-blocking sealer on the concrete pavers, but periodic reapplication of the sealer is necessary to maintain the pavers' original color.  Apart from color preservation, sealing also provides protection against absorption of oils, grime, and dirt that may otherwise be absorbed by porous concrete pavers.

Permeable Pavers in Escambia County, Florida

Rock Hardscapes is a certified installer of permeable concrete pavers for both commercial and residential clients in West Florida.  Permeable pavers are a sustainable choice that is well-suited to green building practice.  Permeable paving is promoted by the LEED Green Building Rating System as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional, solid-surface paving.

What Makes Permeable Pavers Different?

Simply put, they encourage rainwater to filter directly through the paved area, decreasing runoff during storms and positively impacting the local environment.  Permeable concrete pavers allow natural drainage while still providing a safe, clean, and convenient surface for both vehicles and pedestrians.  In the subtropical climate of the Pensacola area, heavy rain is common.  Excessive solid surfaces can cause this rain to pool or flood, leading to problems with erosion and pollution of natural waters.  Permeable pavers offer a suitable solution for managing rain and minimizing the effects of runoff during our Southern summer thunderstorms.  And because permeable pavers can be just as attractive and effective as traditional pavers, you don't have to sacrifice convenience or aesthetics when you opt for permeable paving!  Rock Hardscapes can help you enjoy the benefits of permeable pavers and contribute to sustainable building practices while maintaining a functional and beautiful outdoor space.
